'Learn and Grow Together'
Play
Play is a valued process for children's learning. It develops imagination, story making skills, critical thinking, problem solving skills and communication. At Winthrop Pre-Primary we incorporate different types of play.
Guided Play is play that involves teachers and students to achieve a specific focus or learning outcome.
Child directed play allows the students to choose whom, where, when and what context they wish to play in. The play is in an environment that encourages discovery and challenge.

Reading
To supplement the many valued interactions your child has with texts, your child will be bringing home readers twice a week. These readers will provide opportunities for your child to practice word identification and comprehension strategies. they are learning at school. More detailed information will be sent home with your child when we are ready to begin the reading program.
Reading is one of the many skills that we value in Pre-Primary and it is important that children see reading as a enjoyable experience and one that they experience success in. The reading program will begin in Term Two

Sight Words
Our sight word program involves learning 200 frequently occurring words that are used regularly in reading and writing. We are promoting automatically - that is instant recognition and processing of these words. This significantly improves fluency and flexibility in reading. Students will be tested to see where they need to start and sight words will then be sent home. Sight Words will begin in Term One. See your class teacher for days that sight words will be tested.
Spelling
Before children can spell they need to be able to hear, say and recognise individual letter sounds and combinations.
Each Pre-Primary class focuses on oral language (hearing and saying the sounds) and writing (recognising the letters).
Knowing the letter names is a different skill to knowing the letter sounds. In Pre-Primary our main focus is knowing the sounds that the letter makes, knowing the letter names comes after this.

Fundamental Movement Skills
We value many aspects of education in Pre-Primary and for this reason we specifically focus on gross and fine motor skills of children. Children who are confident with most Fundamental Movement Skills are able to participate in a wide variety of recreational activities throughout their life and have higher self esteem and confidence. Some children are able to use Fundamental Movement Skills to show their knowledge, understanding and skills better than through the use of writing or drawing. Your child will be doing Fundamental Movement Skills twice a week at school, please ensure they are wearing appropriate clothing and footwear on those days.
